SK-II

Agency: Fake Love, Huge, Google
Role: AR Developer & CG Artist
Location: Shibuya, Tokyo 2018
Tech/Dev: Unity3D, C#, ARCore, Android, AWS

Client Request: Create an experiential popup store to celebrate the launch of the limited edition Karan Singh SK-II bottles.

Agency Solve: Create immersive smart store that lets guests design their own experience.

Creative Tech Approach: Use graphics and shape of building to create interactive AR experience. We wanted users to feel AR is part of the building. This was important because AR elements were representing their key ingredient, Pitera.

We created a popup store filled with AR markers where guests would take AR selfies, get skin tests, and takeaway samples.

Pitera was the magical ingredient (???) in the SK-II product they wanted our team to visualize through uses of creative technology. We created a house full of these visuals and added markers everywhere, where users collected those AR Pitera experiences to receive gifts at the end.

To make the AR experience feel realistic, I tried hard to incorporate physical reactions and movements from our pop-up environments: balls crushing into a wall, mirrored AR objects, balloons bouncing into each other, EQ bricks reacting to sound, and more. In the top right photo below, the AR objects seem to be reflected on mirror (this was an idea from one of my creatives and was so brilliant. It really made AR object feel real!).

The project had many more challenges. To name just a few:

  • Finding a way to update 100+ phones once we found a bug

  • Creating a server that triggered lighting and speakers in the house

  • Finding a place to code in Shibuya

  • Making sure people return the phone

  • Anddddd more

This was a really tough project but was funnnnnn indeed! (Also staying at Tokyo for 3month was definitely a plus!)
